Background

Safe and secure operation of natural gas transmission and distribution systems is an ongoing public interest which requires researching and applying new and emerging technologies with the potential for improving pipeline inspection, operation, maintenance, and consequently increase pipeline safety.

This software and database provide a baseline of recently developed pipeline safety and integrity management technologies. It identifies various emerging pipeline inspection and damage prevention technologies for their potential to improve and enhance pipeline safety and integrity.

The database provides a list and descriptions of recent commercial and close-to-market equipment, sensors, systems, and processes. These technologies were developed by Federal, State , industry and various research organizations in the following technology areas:

1. Damage Prevention and Mitigation:
   • Pipe locating, leak, and excavation damage detection
   • Damage mitigation
2. Threats and Integrity Management:
   • Anomaly detection and dharacterization
   • Pipeline testing, analysis, and repair
3. Pipeline Risk and Information Management:
   • Data management and information systems
   • System risk modeling and security

In 2016, the Energy Commission expanded its research funds to build a portfolio of technology assessments, research projects, expanded models, and tools to improve the safety and integrity of the natural gas pipelines in California.

With the expanded research program, the current project PIR-15-012 helps prioritizing and implementing emerging and close-to-market technologies that have the most potential to impact California. It also identifies steps necessary to increase the success and adoption rate of the funded safety and integrity technologies.
